Bricks From Stone Dust

Brick are produced in almost all towns and villages in India, and organized bricks fields are found in the neighborhood of large cities. Refractory bricks, a special class of bricks, are included under refraction. Bricks are made of earth or natural clay fly ash, sand dust which should be sufficiently plastic and should not shrink, crack or warp during drying and burning. Iron oxide in the clay is responsible for the characteristics red colour of Bricks, and excess of it gives them a bluish black colour. The usual size of bricks are 12" x 6" x 22" (old Indian bricks) 10" x 5" x 3" (usual Bengal bricks), 92" x 4 3/4" x 2 3/4" (Bengal P.W.D. Specif), 9" x 4" x 22" (Northern India P.W.D. specif). The width of the brick is about 2" less than half of its length, so that one brick when laid lengthwise will just cover two bricks laid cross wise, with a filling of mortar between them. Hollow bricks are light (about 11 percent lighter than ordinary bricks) and afford better insulation against sound heat and cold. They may be made in any brick factory worked by power and are manufactured in three sizes: 9" x 42" x 3", 9" x 52" x 2 5/8" and 9" x 62" x 3".
