Magnesite is natural magnesium carbonate (MgCo3). The term 'magnesite' is loosely used as a synonym for magnesia as are also the terms 'caustic calcined magnesite'dead burned magnesite and synthetic magnesite. Magnesite is a mineral which may be used for epsum salt and for manufacture of magnesium metal. Magnesite is one of the most widely distributed element in the earth's crust and constitutes nearly 2.7% of the same. It is eighty element in order or decorance in the world. It was iscovered by Davy in 1808; was first isolated in 1829 by Busy. It was mainly used in flash light powders and pyrotechnics. Magnesium alloys for aircraft were developed and used during world war II. The other extensive use during that period was incendiary ombs. It is lightest metal with widespread industrial applications. It is element of atomic No. 12 of group IIA in the periodic table. Our country is extremely rich in mineral wealth and practically all the minerals except few are available in the country. It is unfortunate that their commercial utilisation and development of industries based on these minerals was quite slow in the past. The present progress in the field is quite satisfactory and this industry has bright future in the years to come.
