Coal is a combustible solid, usually stratified. It is formed by the burial of partially decomposed vegetable in past geological ages. After that, pressure and temperature changed them to coal. Variations in the proportion of various plant components cause the different types of coal such as banded,splint cannel and bog head coal. The content of impurities in coal make different grades of coal. The following are the different kinds of coal depending upon their stage of coalification. They are black in colour and have dull waxy lustre. It is a higher stage of formation than lingnite. So it is denser and harder than lignite. its moisture content is also less than lignite and is 12% to 25%. Sub-bituminous coals ignite easily and have calorific value between 7000 to 15,000 B.T.U. They are so called as they burn with smoky yellow flame like bitumen and their distillation product is coal tar, which is of bituminous nature. It is black in colour and is generally banded due to the formations of layers of bright coal in it. It has got dull to the brilliant luster. Bituminous coals are dense and hard, and have no effect on exposure to air. The calorific value of such coals is 11,000 to 15,000 B.T.U.Parts. These are used for steam raising gas production and for by products manufacturing. Bituminous coals are easy to handle and have got very good heating qualities. So they are the most widely used coals in the world.
