Product Description

Leather Finishing [Eiri-1463]

The finishing of leather is probably one of the most complicated and least understood phases of the industry. Much of the technical writing that has been done in the past has concentrated primarily on the specific chemical problems of unhairing, tanning, coloring and fat liquoring. The finishes, however, have been given scant attention. The reason for this is probably that the finishing of leather has long been more of an art than a science. The tanner has been receiving from his suppliers leather finishes of a increasingly specialized nature, and as the industry has become more complicated, he has come to have even less understanding of the finishing procedure. Finishing leather is not simply a matter of painting the surface to cover up the mistakes of the previous operations or to improve it by concealing scratches. Finishing contributes to the durability and beauty of leather and must be an integral part of the process. The compatibility of materials, tannage, coloring, and Fat liquoring all play an important role in the character of the leather and the kind of finish it will take. From a historical point of view, the leather industry was for many years a local affair, and the materials available for finishing were limited. As a consequence, the tanner put much hand effort into the development of beauty of the finish, and the cobbler simply worked with the leathers that were available and hoped to preserve the finish as best he could. In today's technology the point of communication between the shoe manufacturer and the tanner is less firmly established, and often the tanner does not completely understand the ultimate requirements of his product in its final use by the shoe manufacturer. The technology of manufacturing shoes has changed to such a degree that modern leather may be called upon to withstand strenuous conditions of temperature, mechanical operation, and chemical treatment even before the shoe is completed.
