Plasticizers

Plasticizers (UK= plasticisers) or dispersants are additives that increase the plasticity or fluidity of a material. The dominant applications are for plastics, especially polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The properties of other materials are also improved when blended with plasticizers including concrete, clays, and related products. The worldwide market for plasticizers in 2000 was estimated to be several million tons per year. Throughout the period from 1970 to 1995, the worldwide plasticizer markets grew at rates above the various GNPs; however this trend has started to decrease in North America and in Europe. In recent years, the average growth rate in those regions has ranged between 2 and 3%, with projected growth rates of only 1/2%. The Far East is not only the largest market for plasticizers but continues to show the highest growth rates, with the Chinese plasticizer market reported to have grown in excess of 12% in 2002. This rapid growth in China has also contributed to the decline in growth rates in many other parts of the world, as Chinese imports have displaced locally produced materials.
