The year 1992 will mark the start of the third century since the discovery of Titanium, stated to be the ninth most plentiful element in the earth's crest. This non-ferrous metal today holds the same position that was held by aluminum at the turn of the 20th century. Metallurgists and engineers have forecasted a very brilliant future for this metal which represents the most important development in the nbon-ferrous industry since the Second World War. A heavy chemical process industry, the Titanium Dioxide industry has recorded a phenomenal growth since its inception nearly three quarters of a century ago in the United States and Norway, mainly because of its exceptional qualities. These include extraordinary whiteness and brightness close to those of the whitest known substance, magnesium oxide, stability against extreme conditions of environment, tenacity against most chemicals, nontoxicity, high refractive index and thus higher opacity and relative ease in application. Because of these superior qualities, that this metal possesses, other popular white pigments like lithopone, white lead, zinc oxide, antimony oxide, etc., have steadily given way to titanium dioxide, also popularly known by its chemical formula TiO2.
