Entry of private sector into many other industrial areas, entry  of multinations, NRI business and expansion  of  domestic, industrial and business house in wake of liberation are likely to result  in  big  boost in business  travel.  International  media coverage,  increasing awareness about travel, even  among  laymen and   holidaying  are  now  really  developing.  Government   has announced national action plan for tourism in May, 1992 to  boost tourist  arrivals and foreign exchange earnings. India, with  its historical, natural and cultural background is a favourite  place for  tourists from all over the world. In the light of  this,  an attempt  is made to study the growing prospects of investment  in tourism industry.

The spectrum of employment generated by tourism varies  from highly trained communication and computer specialists to room  boys, sales girls, receptionist, waiters and unskilled workers. The airlines, travel  agencies and  tour  operators  also  need several  men and women with a variety of skills which are not  too difficult  to  master. Tourism also provides high  potential  for self employment in a variety of ancillaries such as  horticulture and handicrafts.

India is a democracy at its best with more than 900  million people  steering  the path of progress. This vast land  with  its enormous  diversity of history, people, culture and  human  life, makes for a product mix that can take in almost the entire world.  It  is  also  a  secular  country  with  a  heritage  of  an  all encompassing  ancient  culture and  cosmopolitan  tinge.  Despite these  favourable factors, the international tourist  traffic  to the country still continues to be comparatively less though there has been considerable growth over the years and it has emerged as one of the largest foreign exchange earners of the country.

The  hotel business in India has done pretty well all  these years so  much,  so  that  is  has  acquired  an   international reputation. This can be judged from the fact that more countries  are seeking  India's  collaboration  in  hotel  business. The development  of tourist places like scenic spot or religious  and historic  places does not take account of the hotels and  tourist clubs as an intergral aspect.
